Lab-Grown Diamonds
Facts, Benefits & How They’re Made
Lab-grown diamonds have become one of the most talked-about developments in the jewelry world. As technology advances, more buyers are exploring lab-grown diamonds as an alternative to natural diamonds — especially for earrings, bracelets, and modern engagement rings.
At Forever Diamond Boston, we believe the best choice starts with understanding the facts. This page explains what lab-grown diamonds are, how they’re made, and how they compare to natural diamonds — so you can decide what’s right for you.
What Are Lab-Grown Diamonds?
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, made of pure carbon and sharing the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as natural diamonds.
The difference lies in how they are formed:
Natural diamonds are created deep within the earth over billions of years.
Lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled laboratory environments that replicate those natural conditions.
Once cut and polished, lab-grown diamonds look identical to natural diamonds and are graded using the same diamond quality standards.

Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real Diamonds?
Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are not simulants. They are not cubic zirconia or moissanite.
Lab-grown diamonds:
Are made of carbon
Have the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale)
Exhibit the same brilliance and fire
Are graded using the same 4 Cs
Specialized equipment is required to distinguish lab-grown diamonds from natural diamonds.
How Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Made
Lab-grown diamonds are produced using advanced technology that recreates the conditions under which diamonds naturally form. There are two primary methods used today.
High Pressure, High Temperature (HPHT)
The HPHT process mimics the intense heat and pressure found deep within the earth. A small diamond seed is placed into a chamber with carbon and subjected to extreme pressure and temperatures exceeding 2,000°F. Over time, carbon bonds to the seed, forming a diamond crystal.
This method closely resembles natural diamond formation — just on a much shorter timeline.
Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)
In the CVD process, a diamond seed is placed in a sealed chamber filled with carbon-rich gas. When heated, carbon atoms bond to the seed layer by layer, gradually growing a diamond crystal.
CVD allows for precise control over diamond growth and is commonly used for high-quality lab-grown diamonds.
Lab-Grown Diamonds vs Natural Diamonds
Lab-grown and natural diamonds are visually identical, but buyers often choose between them based on priorities such as origin, pricing, and symbolism.
Key differences include:
Origin: laboratory vs earth-formed
Rarity: natural diamonds are limited by nature
Pricing: lab-grown diamonds are typically more accessible
Tradition: natural diamonds carry long-standing heritage

Understanding the Quality of Lab-Grown Diamonds
Lab-grown diamonds are graded using the same 4 Cs as natural diamonds:
Cut – how well the diamond reflects light
Color – presence or absence of color
Clarity – internal characteristics
Carat Weight – size of the diamond
Lab-grown diamonds are typically certified by reputable laboratories such as IGI and, in some cases, GIA.
